Karanam

In Vedic astrology, Karanas are half-day periods that are used to determine the auspiciousness of a particular time for starting new activities. Each Karana lasts for approximately half a lunar day, or about six hours.

n Vedic astrology, each Karana has its own significance, ruling deity (Devata), and suggested mode of worship:

  1. Bava – Growth and development. Worship Lord Vishnu.
  2. Balava – Strength and determination. Worship Goddess Durga.
  3. Kaulava – Welfare and prosperity. Worship Lord Shiva.
  4. Taitula – Conflict resolution. Worship Lord Ganesha.
  5. Gara – Strategic planning and execution. Worship Goddess Saraswati.
  6. Vanija – Trade and commerce. Worship Goddess Lakshmi.
  7. Vishti (Bhadra) – Removal of obstacles. Worship Lord Shiva or Lord Bhairava.
  8. Shakuni – Success in endeavors. Worship Lord Krishna.
  9. Chatushpada – Agricultural prosperity. Worship Lord Indra.
  10. Naga – Protection and eradication of poison (literal or metaphorical). Worship the Nagas (serpent deities).
  11. Kimstughna – Completion of tasks. Worship the Sun God (Surya).

Each Karana is observed by offering specific prayers and offerings to its ruling deity during that time, especially when commencing new ventures or events to harness their auspicious energies.

  1. Bava: Suitable for starting new ventures, nurturing professions like teaching, or care industries.
  2. Balava: Good for tasks requiring strength and endurance, like sports or physical labor.
  3. Kaulava: Favorable for dealing with liquids, hospitality, and food industries.
  4. Taitula: Good for negotiation, diplomacy, and legal work.
  5. Gara: Suited for scholarly activities, research, and education.
  6. Vanija: Best for commerce, trade, and dealing in sales.
  7. Vishti (Bhadra): Suited for hard labor, tasks involving enforcement, or heavy physical demands.
  8. Shakuni: Favorable for strategic planning, politics, and leadership roles.
  9. Chatushpada: Good for agriculture, animal husbandry, and veterinary sciences.
  10. Naga: Suitable for activities involving water, healing, and spiritual practices.
  11. Kimstughna: Best for completing tasks, clerical work, and administrative duties.
